The San Diego Chargers started at about the same time that the American Football League (AFL) was arranged in 1959 by Barron Hilton. Barron Hilton also founded the Chargers that same year. Before becoming the San Diego Chargers, the team was called the Los Angeles Chargers. It wasn’t until 1961 that the team was moved to San Diego. The Chargers have been to the playoffs seven times since the AFL joined with the National Football League (NFL). Along with that, they have participated in three AFC Championship games. After 51 years of existence, the Chargers have made it to the big game one time. The Chargers of San Diego faced the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX at the end of the 1994 season.
