The San Diego Chargers have been a professional football team since 1959. In their 51 years of existence, the Chargers have made one Super Bowl appearance in which they fell to the San Francisco 49ers in the 1994 season. The Chargers were among one of the first professional football teams when joining the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. The AFL later joined the National Football League (NFL).
