Michigan has claimed the national title 11 times. Six titles were claimed under the coaching of Michigan’s greatest coach ever, Fielding H. Yost. He won national titles in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918 and 1923. All of the years he went undefeated with only one tie in 1903. The next two titles were claimed under Harry G. Kipke. He claimed them during the 1932 and 1933 seasons going 8-0 the first year and 7-0-1 the next season. Fourteen years later the next title was won under Fritz Crisler in 1947 going 11-0 during the season. The next year Michigan’s new coach Bennie Oosterbaan won a national title going 9-0 during the season. There was a 49-year drought of national titles for Michigan ending in 1997 when Lloyd Carr went 12-0 and won the national title. National Titles Picture
