The Big Ten was first established in 1896. It is the oldest Division 1 athletic conference in the United States. The Big Ten Conference was formerly known as the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference. Lake Forest was an original member but did not attend a meeting in 1896 and was replaced by Michigan. Michigan was gone from 1907 until 1917 after being voted out for breaking league rules.
