An alliance is a defense agreement between multiple nations. World War I had two alliances. Italy, Austria, and Germany were involved in the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance was later called the “Central Powers”. Opposing them was the Triple Entente, consisting of Great Britain, France, and Russia. The Triple Entente later became known as the “Allies”. A few countries remained neutral. These included Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Switzerland. The Allies seemed to have an advantage because they surrounded the Central Powers.
