The Special Operations units are groups of highly skilled and highly trained men and women. There are four main types and a few smaller units. Rescue companies respond to almost every fire and many entrapments and are used for their specialized equipment. Each of the five New York boroughs have a rescue company with Rescue 1 being in Manhattan and Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. These trucks go on calls in large “toolboxes on wheels”. Squad companies are like miniature rescue companies but squads respond in regular engines with specialized equipment. Other main units include the fireboats and HAZMAT units. FDNY currently has two fireboats named Firefighter II and Three Forty Three. Smaller specialized units include foam, brush fire, thawing, tactical support, Maxi-Water system, field communications and mask service. |
