Before the Anglo-Saxons, there were other kinds of people that inhabited the land. There were Celts, which consisted of Britons and Gaels, and they inhabited England and Ireland. In the first century, Romans conquered the Britons and made lasting contributions to the society. After the year 450, Germanic tribes invaded, and the two largest groups were the Anglos and the Saxons. The name given to the kingdom was “Angleland” which later turned into England. Stories and the history of the period was written in a book by Venerable Bede called A History of the English Church and People.
