On April 1, 1954 the U.S Air Force Academy was established. This academy was made around Colorado Springs and is still here today. The Air Force academy is the youngest service academy in the United States of America. Hubert R. Harmon retired and became the first superintendent for this academy. The first class to attend had 306 students. The first graduating class had about 207 students on June 3, 1959. Women finally were able to attend the U.S Air Force Academy in 1976 and graduate in1980, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a bill allowing the students to increase in Cadet Wing from 2,529 to 4,417. |
