The American Red Cross aids in over 70,000 disasters each year. The types of disasters can be from house fires, car accidents, and explosions to hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. The American Red Cross is not a government agency, but since 1905, the organization has had authority from the United States Congress to aid in relief. Some of the more recent disasters that the ARC has aided include the 2005 hurricanes, Comair Flight 5191, and the Minneapolis bridge collapse. After the hurricanes, approximately 240,000 Red Cross volunteers helped with a variety of services. Following the Comair disaster, meals and emotional support were supplied. In the wake of the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse, food and comfort was given to the families of those who were involved.
