The Gulf around Key West is very shallow. Depths vary from shallow reefs in 30 feet or less to deep wrecks in more than 130 feet of water. The world’s third largest reef is surrounding the Keys. There is a huge variety of marine life that lives in the shallow waters of the Keys; for example, Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Blue Tang, Blue Striped Grunt, French Grunt, Yellowtail Snapper, Barracuda, Horse Eye Jack, Goliath Grouper, Eagle Rays, and turtles. The water temperature ranges from 21-31° C or 69-88° F.
