Cylinder heads are the first and foremost place to start squeezing more power from your engine. The type and quality of your heads will determine the ability for more power add-ons like turbos or superchargers. Also, without a quality set of heads, the power capabilities of your 350 may be compromised if they cannot handle the other goodies you plan on installing on your motor. Cylinder heads contain the valves, which allow air and fuel to enter the combustion chamber, and exhaust to escape. When looking for cylinder heads, it is generally accepted that the larger the valves are, the more horsepower you can expect to see. Another good tip is to look for heads that are specific to your application, whether that be racing or just looking for more power, because the manufacturers will have tuned specific models for specific applications. A new head can show significant power increases, but may be limited by the camshaft, so let’s take a look at those next.
