Edward Elric

Edward Elric

Edward is one of the main characters in the series. He’s the older brother of Alphonse Elric, and an excellent alchemist. He can transmute without using a transmutation circle, making him even more impressive. He is short (for most of the series), with a fiery personality and has an aversion to milk. Giving the series its name, Edward becomes known as the Fullmetal Alchemist after passing the state alchemy test at the young age of 12.

Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric

Al, another main character in the story and who seems to be a boy inside a suit of armor, actually has no body. He and his brother, Ed, tried to complete the ultimate sin in alchemy. The brothers lose more than they gain; Edward has an automail arm and leg while Al loses his entire body. Al cannot transmute without a transmutation circle, and Ed wouldn’t let him take the state alchemist test, deeming the responsibility to be his alone. Al loves animals and hides a kitten in his armor at one point in the series.

Alex Louise Armstrong

Alex Louis Armstrong

Alex is one of those characters that are completely over-the-top, but everyone can’t help love. He is the Iron Fist Alchemist, and looks the part when he consistently takes off his shirt when fighting. Nobody’s really sure why, but he usually wins, so whatever works. He is also a man of the military, so Ed and Al see him quite a bit. Alex provides a lot of comic relief but can also be very serious when needed. It’s a balance that works well with the story.

Jean Havoc

Jean Havoc

Jean Havoc is one of the guys under Roy’s control. He is not an alchemist but played an important role later in the series when he helped Roy and Riza try to catch the homunculi (the bad guys).

Maes Hughes

Maes Hughes

Let the crying commence! Maes Hughes was the family man of the series, always showing the other military workers pictures of his daughter Alicia. He was a very loved character. In Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, he was killed off very quickly, much to people’s dismay (in Fullmetal Alchemist he was in the series longer). Maes dies when he figures out an important part to the mystery of the philosopher’s stone, and the bad guys trick him into thinking that his wife (a bad guy in disguise) was holding him at gunpoint. Because Maes loves his family so much, he can’t shoot her and ends up dying in the phone booth where he tried to call Roy.

Roy Mustang

Roy Mustang

Roy is a man of the military, a military dog and the Flame Alchemist. He finds out what Al and Ed have done and visits the boys at the Rockbell home, telling Ed that he should be a state alchemist. Pinako gets very angry at Roy and makes him and his companion leave. Roy is gone for a few episodes, and then comes back when Ed and Al are grown up and Ed has decided to be a state alchemist. Roy provides a lot of humor in the series as he and Ed butt heads quite a few times.

Riza Hawkeye

Riza Hawkeye

Riza is Roy’s other half. She is always at his side, making sure he doesn’t mess up. She bails him out quite a few times, especially when it rains and Roy can’t use his ignition gloves to make fire. Riza doesn’t use alchemy, but she’s lethal with her gun. Riza is one of the many strong female roles in the series, and is seen as the only one Roy should love.

Winry Rockbell

Winry Rockbell

Winry is the childhood friend of Ed and Al. She’s very talented at fixing Ed’s automail, which he frequently breaks. Winry plays an important part in the story towards the end. Her parents were doctors in the Ishvalan War, and were killed by Scar, an alchemist who ends up aiding the Elric brothers. Winry lives with her grandmother Pinako, helping run the automail business.

Mei Xiang

Mei Chang and Xiao-Mei

These two are princesses from Xing, a country quite a ways away. Mei, the girl, is also in search of the philosopher’s stone to protect her kingdom and save her lineage. During the series, she imagines Ed as a prince but is sorely disappointed. Luckily, Al comes in to save the day.

Trisha Elric

Trisha Elric

Trisha is the mother of Ed and Al. She was very hard-working and loved the boys greatly. In the beginning of the series, she finds out that both of the boys can do alchemy and is awed that they taught themselves. Sadly, her life comes to an end from a sickness she had been hiding from the boys and Pinako. She was only in the series for an episode or two, but without her, the series wouldn’t have a storyline.

Sheska

Sheska

Sheska is a librarian at the main library in Central, where the main military branch is. She was recruited when the library went up in flames (more work of the bad guys) and they realized she could remember everything she read. She worked with Maes for the short time she was seen on the series.

Pinako Rockbell

Pinako

Pinako is the very short grandmother of Winry. She started the automail business in her home and is responsible for helping Ed to be able to walk again. She loves Ed and Al, though she does berate them every time they come home. Her role in the story is seen more towards the beginning of the series, but she is still a well-loved character.
