The stadium of the UNC Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is named the Dean Smith Center. It is named after Coach Dean Smith (coached from 1961-1997) who was one of the most successful coaches in collegiate basketball. In his career of 36 years, he had coached his team to 879 wins at UNC. He also coached Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Roy Williams was one of his assistant coaches for quite a few years as well. Winning at least 20 or more games for 30 of his last 31 seasons made him one of the greatest coaches ever. He led UNC to 11 Final Four appearances, and two National Championships (1982 & 1993).
In the 1976 Olympics, Smith coached Team USA to a gold medal. Then in 1983 he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Though he coached very many seasons at UNC, Smith passed away February 7th, 2015, but the University of North Carolina and so many more will never forget the great man he was.
