In 1991 the jerseys were just a solid white or “Carolina Blue” (coral blue) jersey with either a white stripe or a Carolina Blue stripe down the sides of the jersey. Coach Dean Smith wanted to recreate the UNC uniforms. So he asked Alexander Jillian, a four-time winner of the Coty Award for American fashion and three-time recipient of a Cutty Sark Menswear Award, to redesign the uniforms. Jillian redesigned them and it was named the “Argyle” uniforms.
The Argyle uniforms have been most popular to the university. The Argyle of the jersey (runs down the sides of the top of the jersey and the sides of the shorts), is like a diamond or square shapes on the jersey. It has been told that each corner of the squares represents the “four corner” set used in the games that Dean Smith would coach with. The color has always been just a favorite of the university.
These uniforms are the same style that the USA mens olympic basketball team wore in 1991. (this picture of this uniform is much more modern than what the uniforms were in 1991) |
