The original L.T. of football was an aggressive linebacker with highlighted speed sending the quarterbacks fleeing to the sidelines. Lawrence Taylor with an amazing 132 ½ sacks for 3 seasons became a menace for any offense. He has won three Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 1981 (his rookie season), 1982, and 1986. When Lawrence retired in 1993, he had the most career sacks of any linebacker. Taylor came out of North Carolina being the second overall draft pick for the New York Giants in 1981. This 10-time Pro Bowler had entered the Hall of Fame in the first season of eligibility. Although there was criticism of his problems with drugs and alcohol, which did not outweigh his on-field influence, he still was able to be in the Hall of Fame and will be remembered as L.T.; the best linebacker to play the game.
