Lidstrom Picture 1 Nicklas Lidstrom was born April 28, 1970 in Vasteras, Vastmanland, Sweden. He is the first NHL captain to be born and trained in Europe to win the Stanley Cup. He was also the first European player to be named playoff MVP. He won the World Championship in 1991 and scored the game-winning goal against Finland at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Lidstrom has won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman from the 2000-2001 season to the 2002-2003 season and again from the 2005-2006 season to the 2007-2008 season. He has been nominated for this award 12 of the last 14 seasons and hasn’t finished worse than sixth. Lidstrom was the first European captain for the Detroit Red Wings in franchise history.
