Yzerman Picture 2 Steve Yzerman was a center from the Peterborough Petes. He was drafted in 1983 with the Detroit Red Wings first-round pick. His rookie year he led the Red Wings in scoring and started the Wings’ climb back to the top. It was the first time the Red Wings had made the playoffs in six years. In 1987 Yzerman became the captain and won a playoff series for only the second time in the modern era. He led his team to their first division title in 23 years in 1988. In 1989 Yzerman scored a career-best 65 goals. The next year he scored 62 goals and missed the playoffs, the last time the Red Wings have missed the playoffs. Yzerman is the Detroit Red Wings second all time scorer.
