History Picture 1 The Detroit Red Wings missed only four playoffs between the 1933-34 and 1965-66 seasons. The Red Wings have made the playoffs 25 of the last 27 seasons. They have made the playoffs the last 20 seasons in a row. They hold the longest current streak of post-season appearances in all professional sports in North America. The Detroit Red Wings were previously known as the Detroit Cougars from 1926-1930, then Detroit Falcons from 1930-1932 and since 1932 they have been known as the Detroit Red Wings. Between 1967-1982 seasons was called the “Dead Wings” era. One year after making the Finals, the Red Wings finished fifth, 24 points out of the playoffs. They did not make another playoff appearance for another 15 years.
