Toph is a twelve-year-old girl that may possibly be the best Earthbender in the series. She becomes Aang’s Earthbending teacher. There is a catch, however: Toph is blind. She learned to “see” with her Earthbender, feeling the vibrations of people and objects through the ground with her bare feet. This technique was gained from some Badgermoles, who were the first Earthbenders, when Toph was around six years old. According to Toph, they understood each other, because they were both blind. Toph is a tough girl with an even tougher attitude. She was very rebellious towards her parents, who were over-protective and saw her as a defenseless, innocent little girl. However, they were very wrong. Toph ran away from home to travel with Aang and teach him Earthbending, but also as an attempt to get out of her parents’ fierce protective grip. She’s witty and hard but has a kind spirit when needed. |
Toph uses what is called Seismic Sense to “see” the world around her through the Earth. Toph is the only known user of Seismic Sense, though it is thought that King Bumi may know of it as well. Seismic Sense is the ability to perceive one’s surrounding by sensing vibrations in the ground and is as precise as normal sight. However, Seismic Sense can also “see” past things that would be an obstacle to regular sight. Things such as walls and dust clouds are ineffective to Seismic Sense. Acute users of this ability can even detect caverns and other Earth pockets deep underground. Another ability of Seismic Sense would be that users of it could bend metal. Tiny particles of Earth still exist in metal, but are too small for any normal Earthbender to bend. Users of Seismic Sense can sense the particles in the metal and are able to “grab” onto the particles and bend them. Seismic Sense is also a great lie detector. The human body normally has a physical reaction when it lies and Earthbenders using Seismic Sense can tell when this happens, enabling them to pick up the lie. However, it’s ineffective against a skilled lair that can control their reaction. |
