Sparky Anderson |
One of the most famous managers of all-time is Sparky Anderson. Anderson was the Cincinnati Reds’ manager from 1970- 1978 and Detroit manager from 1979- 1995. Sparky led the Tigers to become a winning team right away. In 1984, he helped Detroit to start the season with a 35-5 record and finish with a 104-58 record, which is a franchise record for the most wins in a season. After a great regular season, the Tigers carried it into the playoffs and beat the San Diego Padres in five games to win the World Series. At the end of the year, Sparky was named Manager of The Year for the first time with the Tigers. In 1987, Anderson helped the Tigers to finish first in the American League East and finish with a 98-64 record. This season earned Anderson his second Manager of the Year Award and in 2000 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Another great manager in Detroit is Jim Leyland, the current manager. He joined the Tigers in 2006 after a record of 71-91 in 2005. Leyland showed just how good of a manger he was right away, leading them to a 95-67 regular season and earning a spot in the playoffs. Detroit beat the New York Yankees in the ALDS and then the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS. In the World Series, they faced the St. Louis Cardinals led by Albert Pujols. The Tigers only won one game in the series, so the St. Louis took the championship in five games. After helping Detroit make it to the World Series, Leyland was named American League Manager of the Year. |
