Tiger Stadium has been a famous landmark in Detroit since it opened in 1912. Formerly named Navin Field and Briggs Stadium, Tiger Stadium opened the same day as Boston Red Sox stadium Fenway Park and just five days after the sinking of the Titanic. The stadium was known by many as “The Corner”, due to the fact that it was right on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Trumbull Avenue. In 1968, the Tigers won the first World Series championship while the stadium was named Tiger Stadium. On September 27, 1999, in the final game ever played at Tiger Stadium, Detroit beat the Kansas City Royals 8-2. After the game, a ceremony was held with former Tiger greats. In 2008, Tiger Stadium began to be demolished and on September 21, 2009, the demolishing was over and Tiger Stadium was no more. Since 2000, the Detroit Tigers have played all of their home games at Comerica Park. | |
