Who is she? Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl from District 12. She has a younger sister, age 12, named Primrose Everdeen. Katniss takes care of her family nearly single handedly after the death of her father. Mrs. Everdeen went into a depression when Mr. Everdeen was killed in a mining accident when Katniss was 11 years old. Katniss and her father had a very close relationship and it was Katniss’s father that taught her how to use a bow and arrow, hunt, and trade at The Hob, a local black market. These traits are what help Katniss keep her family alive for 5 years as her mother wallows in depression. Gale was also a lot of help to Katniss. Gale is a friend of Katniss's that she met while hunting in the forbidden woods outside of District 12. He quickly became a very important part of Katniss's life and together they hunted, exchanged knowlegde, and kept both of their families alive. Gale's family became almost like a extension of Katniss's and vice versa. |

How did she got invovled? When the Reaping comes around in the story, Katniss’s name actually isn’t the one that is drawn from the ball; Prim’s is. Katniss has always been overly protective of her little sister, seeing her as a little child in desperate need of protection from the outside world. When Katniss hears Prim’s name called, she freezes in shock for about three seconds before she runs to the stage, yelling that she volunteers to take Prim’s place without a second thought. This thrust Katniss headlong into a series of goodbyes, in which she receives a token from a girl at school; a mockingjay pin. (The importance of this pin doesn’t really emerge till the end of the book and is carried over into Catching Fire. This is all explained later on the Mockingjay page.) From the goodbyes, Katniss is thrown into a long process of television interveiws, being paraded around the Capitol with the other tributes and training for the Games. After a couple weeks, the Games finally begin. |
