Democracy is a type of government in which all citizens can vote. There are different types of democracy: representative, direct, and hybrid. The United States is a representative democracy since 1787. An example of a direct democracy would be Ancient Greece: they let their eligible citizens vote directly on issues, whereas the United States elects a educated official to make the decision for them. Representative democracy has proved more efficient in allowing things to get done than a direct democracy. A hybrid is a mix of the the two, such as Switzerland’s government. They allow initiatives and referendums at both the local and federal levels.
