European tribes settled into the Netherlands about 2,000 years ago. They wanted animals that would be the most efficient. The black cattle of the Batavians and white cows of Friesians were met together. They bred them to form a new genetic hybrid that would have a high efficiency with low feed resource needs. A Dutch sailing master brought over a Holstein cow to the United States in 1852. That started the major rush for starting dairy farms. |
