Duke Rivalry
Dean Smith Center

North Carolina and Duke is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, most intense rivalries in all of sports. Sometimes called the Battle of Tobacco Road, these campuses are separated by only eight miles. Since the first game between these two teams in 1920, North Carolina leads the all-time series 130-98. In 2006, the game was the most watched college basketball game in ESPN history. During the game in 2007, one play showed how intense these games can get. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina was elbowed in the face by Duke’s Gerald Henderson, causing Henderson to be ejected from the game. As soon as Hansbrough fell, he jumped up in anger but was held back by a teammate. The elbow to the face gave Hansbrough a very bloody and broken nose.
