Over the years, there have been many great basketball players at the University of North Carolina (UNC). In fact, there have been 11 players named national player of the year since 1924 and 12 players named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) player of the year. Some of the most notable players include Phil Ford, Michael Jordan, and Tyler Hansbrough. All three of these players have their jersey number retired and of course were National Player of the Year once. Phil Ford played at UNC for four years. During his career, he had 2,290 points, a record at the time but Tyler Hansbrough later broke that record. He was also the only player in the ACC to have over 2,000 points and 600 assists, but since then, Travis Best has achieved that as well. Michael Jordan is probably the best-known basketball player ever. In 1982, his first year at North Carolina, he won ACC Freshman of the Year and also in 1982, he made the game winning shot in the NCAA National Championship game. He decided to enter the NBA Draft after his junior season and in the three years, he averaged 17.7 points per game and five rebounds per game. Tyler Hansbrough is the most recent player to have his number retired at North Carolina. During his four years at UNC, he won ACC Freshman of the Year and was National Player of the Year in 2007-08. In 2009, he set a record for the most free throws made in a career in all of college basketball. He finished his career as the all-time leading scorer at North Carolina with 2,302 points.
