The last time the Yankees won the World Series was in 2009. They defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in 6 games. They won the championship at Yankee Stadium in the final game after a big game by Hideki Matsui, who was also named World Series MVP. They won 7-3 after the Yankees knocked out Philly starter Pedro Martinez after four innings and proceeded to knock in three more runs off of Chad Durbin. Hideki Matsui went 3-4 with a homer and six RBI’s and Andy Pettitte went 5 and 2/3 innings to get the win. Mariano Rivera got Shane Victorino to ground out for the final out. For the 27th time in franchise history, the New York Yankees were World Champions. |
